The belt tensioner maintains correct tension on the serpentine (V-ribbed) belt throughout its service life. A worn tensioner causes belt slip, squealing, and premature belt wear — and can lead to sudden belt failure, loss of alternator charge, and overheating. When replacing the drive belt, always inspect the tensioner and idler pulley and replace them together for a complete, reliable repair.

Replacement Interval

Inspect at every belt replacement. Replace every 100,000 km or when bearing noise, pulley wobble, or loss of spring tension is detected.
